The Dominican Republic is located inn the Caribbean, southeast of Cuba and due west of Puerto Rico, on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. The country borders the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Mona Passage. The total area of the Dominican Republic is roughly 48,000 square kilometers and it has the highest mountain range in the Caribbean yet even has seawater lakes that are below sea level.

The north coast of the Dominican Republic, called the Amber Coast, is also sometimes referred to as the Costa Verde ("green coast"). The north coast is largely unspoiled and pristine with lush tropical forests, sweeping beaches and soaring sea cliffs. The varied topography of the north coast adds to the beauty by providing textures, vistas and hues not found elsewhere on the island.
